#ableism

My life has changed a lot in the last month. I started using a wheelchair about 80 percent of the time and learning a whole new level of what it means to have a disability and be proud of it.
A good friend of mine made a comment the other day that having a wheelchair meant being less independent. While I knew that isn't true, the pain of ableism still hurt.
Be strong with the life you have been given. Don't apologize for the choices you have to make in your life. And assert peaceful resistance when dealing with an ableist mindset. We change their minds through one kickass moment at a time.
CW: depression, anxiety, body dysmorphia.
It’s been a while since I’ve had a pretty awful mental health day. It’s absolutely infuriating because so many wonderful things happened today. But somehow my mind still feels like it’s stuck inside a pressure cooker ready to explode at any moment. It’s been one of those days where my depression, anxiety and body image all ganged up on me at the same time. They worked tirelessly to make sure I felt like 100% absolute shit all day. It didn’t matter that I got to sleep in, I showered, went to a lovely brunch with so many friends, saw my besties for the first time in a while, and went shopping for some things I needed/wanted, laughed, joked and ate. I could have won the lottery, fallen in love and traveled the world today but I still would have wanted to curl up into a ball and cry. It’s scary how real these feelings are and how easily my mind believes my thoughts. How is it that one day I’m on top of the world and the next I feel disgusting, unlovable, unworthy, ugly, moody, lonely, fat (in the negative way), a burden, and sad? My body dysmorphia is off the charts today. I spent way too long in that dressing room picking apart my body. I found new rolls and crevices. I saw myself in different angles and lights. I browsed through clothing that was only sized up to 14 and felt worthless. I roamed isles and isles of heels, pumps and wedges that I would never be able to wear again because of my disability. I waited for people who were unaware and didn’t even move to make way for me in my wheelchair. How can you feel completely singled out and invisible at the same time? I’m turning my lights off in the hopes that the darkness will cradle me to sleep and tomorrow I can start again. .

Appreciate this article from @crutches_and_spice about accessibility and Malaysia Goodson, a mother who fell and died as she struggled to carry her baby’s stroller into the New York City Subway last month.
.
“One group who has not expressed surprise has been the disabled community. Because, while Goodson’s death was entirely preventable, we are familiar with the reality of inaccessibility in transport and in society as a whole.”
.
“Trains along the regional rail lack consistency in accessible seating. Elevators break or are shut down for maintenance. Buses are at the mercy of other drivers blocking their ability to kneel at the curb for wheelchair users, and not every station or stop is accessible. Para transit isn’t any better. Transport services designed specifically for disabled passengers are overloaded and can run slowly, leading disabled people to miss important appointments and meetings.”

ever since elementary school ended, i have had the most trouble with making/keeping friends.
as a teenager, someone told me that people probably didn't want to be friends with me because i was in a wheelchair.

that stuck with me ever since. i want it to just be that person's opinion, but i can't help but feel the veracity of the statement. i am constantly working on trying to convince myself that it's false. since then, i have grown closer to God, & i told myself i didn't need good friends. i would settle for people taking advantage of me & treating me like crap because that's what nice people do.

while my relationship with God is the most important, he wants us to have relationships with others too. we're not meant to handle life completely without support from others. i have learned that having friends isn't the most important thing in life, but they are indeed great to have.
i wish to express something to that one person who spoke to me years ago & to anyone who feels similar or scared to be seen with/friends with someone who is obviously disabled. people who are in wheelchairs are capable of love & friendships too. we're capable of being good & particularly loyal friends since we value when people stick around. despite that we do things differently & some of us are physically weaker than the average bear, you don't have to be scared or intimidated to speak to us. we're not beneath able-bodied individuals. we have a lot to offer, including new perspectives, lots of crippled jokes, & rides on the back of our wheelchair.

pictured are a couple of my good friends who thankfully take me as i am

Before I rant, for those who don’t know, this boy is Katie Price’s disabled son. This is NOT okay. Fuck ‘it’s the internet’ and fuck ‘it’s just a joke’ and fuck ‘snowflakes’ and ‘sensitivity’. Y’all. Are. Sick. Obviously, he didn’t like this. This is bullying. This is online abuse. If I SEE anyone in the comments defending this awful behaviour, then I will FIGHT you. Y’all are irritating. The fact that y’all ignored the fact that he was offended is so stupid. Y’all are stupid as SHIT if you condone this behaviour. Just fuck off🤦‍♀️

This #BlackLikeSunday . . . Out of This World P.1

ASSIGNMENT | Does an astronaut—who has arrived into space only through the tools, the labors, the literal labor of their mother & all the resources beholden to Earth ("the past")—claim that Earth is Reverse Anti-Gravity? Or do the planetary, bodily, mat(t)erial & social environments the astronaut was born into simply determine that—as of now—gravity is just actually a defining factor of everyone's Existence most-to-all of the time when they are of Earth?
.
Reverse Racism is like Reverse Anti-Gravity. For it to actually be able to affect your life in a systemic ("near-absolute") manner you'd literally have to be out of this world. Or in Wakanda. Because "Reverse Racism" isn't a thing in our reality. It's not. I'll explain to you why very clearly
.
IT IS ONLY RACISM. By sociological definition it is all encompassing. Not simply by dictionary definition. Today there are non-heteronormative sociological studies; but the only English dictionary that isn't collated by heteronormative white men who are also old is Urban Dictionary. Yet the dictionary's definition isn't adequate (see photos 2 & 3)
.
According to the actual definition of racism, you cannot include ANYBODY who has reflex reactions to racism as being "racist" against you if you are not also the intended target subject of systemic racism. Which means never "white" people. "Black" people can be racist AGAINST other "black" people as it's systemic. They CANNOT BE "REVERSE RACIST" AGAINST "WHITE" PEOPLE. In this system. N.E.V.E.R. "White" people & "white-passing people," you are never systemically racisted (it's a word now) upon. YOU JUST ARE NOT
.
People can be prejudiced against you. They can be bigoted against you. They can even be misogynist against you (if they're using male or masculine privilege); but if you are not the target audience for one of our globally conditioned systemic biases then you are not the receiver of "reverse" anything. No. You're not. Don't be foolish
.
Can you experience "Systemic Anti-Gravity" or do you have to go into INCREDIBLY SPECIALIZED SPACES held ALOFT FROM SOCIETY in order to be inducted into it?
.

All you have to do is ask, and be willing to listen. That’s all it takes. It truly is that simple. ~Mae 🌺 {ID: tumblr post by disabilityhealth that reads “Even well-meaning abled people can get accessibility wrong. If you’re trying to make something accessible, ask disabled people! If there’s a specific disabled person you’re trying to accommodate, ask them questions about what they need. Please don’t just assume you know what will work for them. Ask them!”}
We had a really lovely Valentines high tea. English tea is a favorite of mine.
.
It’s a little frustrating when servers default to assuming that I’m the interpreter in the relationship (I’m deaf too).
.
Yeah, I’ll muddle along sometimes because it’s easier to pretend I understand you than to correct your mistake.
.
But a better option in this situation is writing out all the foods on our plate so that we can both equally read.
.
It’s also true that written English is not accessible to many deaf people. There’s no single easy answer. It’s just a matter of considering all kinds of communication and accessibility needs.
Any number of us know what it's like to live in a world that does not acknowledge we exist. A lack, or total absence of Artistic projections of our lives and bodies is just one of the many ways representation is denied to many in plain sight. Those who see themselves represented in every way take it for granted. No big deal. But those who don't are agrieved and assaulted by everyone else's Grand epic narratives presented as ideals.
I share these and other images because it's clear It's encumbent on all of us, allies and brave representatives to insist on broader, truthfully complicated representations of the under-represented. Share and indulge. ~Adri

Got #histology on the brain, saw this faded picture on the wall and thought it was a slide 😂 the picture is blurry bc some rando middle age guy asked me what my name was and tried to shake my hand and then asked what I had a cane for. I told him it brings out my eyes and walked away. People are so annoying. Men, you're not entitled to women's attention. Able-bodied people, you're not entitled to disabled people's medical history or explanation, so sod off. This is the casual #ableism you deal with everyday if you have a #disability 🙄 and the kind of weird creeps you have to deal with existing as a girl in public #leaveusalone
Sometimes I feel well enough to schlep enough make up on to cover my pain. I drink enough coffee to keep me awake enough to fake consciousness. Sometimes I can get dressed and do them all in the same day. When that happens I feel almost normal. I trick myself even. I’m so believable that the next thing I hear is “BUT YOU DONT LOOK SICK”. 🤦🏻‍♀️ no shit! I’m allowed to hide my illness just like Becky is allowed to hide her pimples. Sometimes I don’t want to look sick. No one wants to LOOK sick. The other good 1 liner I hear is that I’m too pretty to be sick. I had NO IDEA that me being attractive means that I’m safe from chronic illness. And why the fuck should “ugly” people have to be sick?! I struggle to understand the thinking of an able bodied person. Do they not think before they speak. It’s takes two seconds to stop and say to yourself, hmm should I say this? Does it make sense? Am I possibly going to hurt this persons feelings? Is this info I’m about to tell going to be something they actually haven’t thought of and or haven’t tried? As a disabled woman, I can say for me, I’d much rather you not address my illness then fill your awkwardness of being with a disabled person with what you think are compliments. Just my two cents. Lemme know if you agree/disagree.

Accessibility shouldn't end once you get in the door. If ramps and lifts are the extent of making your event accessible, it isn't accessible.
-
Picture Description: Bright yellow border with watermark at the bottom surrounding text in bold, all capital letters font. It reads: The ability for everyone to get into the building is only the beginning. Sign language, closed captions, braille, etc. should be just as basic for accessibility as ramps. Larger fonts for pamphlets. Subtitles for museums. Not all disabilities are physical, so not all accommodations are physical. While ramps and lifts are vital, there isn't any point to them if the event doesn't accommodate all disabilities. Accessibility shouldn't end once you get in the door.

Even when we have a panic attack or some other physical symptom, people still have the audacity to say something like this.... {ID: Neurotypical Privilege: No one will dismiss your struggles by telling you "it's all in your head".}

Same goes with any form of discrimination! {ID: Disabled people get to determine what is ableist. People of Color get to determine what is racist. LGBTQ+ people get to determine what is homophobic and transphobic. We aren't being too sensitive when we say something is discriminatory.}
These kind of parents make me so angry I can’t even explain it. ~Mae 🌺 {ID: tumblr post by thechronicchillpill that reads “There is no one in the world with their heads further up their asses than able bodied parents who think their disabled child’s illness is harder on them than it is on their disabled child.”}
Can we get a quick middle finger in the comments for all the people out there that, upon learning of their friends phobia, actively tease them about it? .

A white, queer activist posted this comment on FB last night and it was wild to see the white, middle class and privileged queers quickly love the post.
The comments from working class queers who are white was equally swift, many pointing out the inherent class bias, the ableism, etc.
I'm married and not super pro-marriage but definitely on the side of "to each their own." Folx have lots of reasons for "making it official." We made it official 25 years ago because I had cancer, we're both working class with broke parents, and my love's employer didn't offer domestic partner health insurance. We love telling folx we got married entirely for financial benefit, what else were we going to do?

I was at an academic conference years ago when a privileged, white queer made the "if you're married you aren't queer" statement in a session on interracial relationships. Ya can imagine the calling in they got plus a big ass history lesson about marriage and white supremacy.

Marriage is the antithesis of radical queerness, I feel that in total. At the same time, who gets to be radical and queer is impacted by racism, classism, anti-Blackness, ableism, and trans phobia from within the queer community AND from outside it. And that's here in the U.S., around the rest of the world queerness and gay marriage face whole other cultural and national barriers, not to mention religious persecution.
That's why this is a white proverb. To be told that one quality you possess can include or exclude you is the either/or thinking of white supremacy culture. And white folx LOVE their rules and exclusion.

All bodies are good bodies! Tous les corps sont beaux! This is an image I made for the Canadian Disability Studies Association. While it doesn’t represent all disabilities, especially considering so many disabilities are invisible, in working with the CDSA we really wanted to get lots of inclusive representation in this image. Body positivity is also about celebrating disabled bodies! ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you so much @carolinekovesi for bringing me onto this project!

Fun fact: my misophonia is only specifically towards chewing and also the sound that beads make when they hit hard surfaces (specific ik but it’s to do with my kosmemophobia) and my kosmemophonia means that I’m disgusted by small objects. And one day in history the gross ass guy next to me fucking pulled out his tooth and instead of putting it away he starts FUCKING BOUNCING IT ON THE TABLE!!! IM SAT NEXT TO THIS GUY WHOS PLAYING WITH HIS FUCKING TOOTH AND ITS MAKING THE WORST SOUND EVER WHAT THE FUCK. I was literally exactly like this, trinna ignore it. I was gonna break down I shit you not there were tears in my eyes.

After my misophonia post I realised it’s not as niche as I thought so here is a REALLY niche one.
Do you have globophobia or know anyone with it?
What should I post about next?
