
Happy birthday to legendary singer, songwriter, and activist, Nina Simone. Simone wowed audiences with her musical combinations of gospel, folk and pop music. As both, an activist and musician Simone became known as “The Voice of the Civil Rights Movement” in the 1960s.
In 1964, she composed "Mississippi Goddam" in response to the 1963 assassination of Medgar Evers and the Birmingham church bombing that killed four Black girls. She also wrote "Four Women," which chronicled the complex lives of four Black women, slavery to present.
