#QOTD What is your favorite movie (or book-to-movie adaptation) soundtrack score of all time? 🎶
Mine is definitely “The Battle”, featured in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. The stories of Narnia have always meant a lot to me. I loved the books, and loved this movie ever since I saw it in theaters. Its corresponding soundtrack was the first one I’ve ever fallen completely in love with. Its musical splendor, beauty, the tension...I could honestly discuss it all day! On another note (lol no pun intended), I’ve had this piano solo for quite some time now, and I’ve always gave up in the middle of the first page because of the 16th note runs! I have had piano lessons in the past, but I’m not “classically trained”. However, I’ve made it a point this year to learn the whole piece! Today I’m reviewing the 12 Steps to Empowerment. These 12 steps help not only you be more positive, but it has a positive effect on those around you.

I was suppose to pick 3 to focus on for the next 30 days.

#8 - Please and Thank You “What we all learned as children and adults - To use “Please and “Thank You” consistently. “Please” and “Thank You” are both words that always project positive feelings and emotion – use them constantly. Bottom line – it’s just polite – and it will make you and all those around you feel better – and remember, it doesn’t take any more time.” Think of all the times that someone opens the door for you at the store, you ask someone for a favor or help, your kids pick up their clothes (even though they are suppose to) do we say these words.

As many of you know, Jae and I are moving to Seattle in just under three weeks. With this decision to move, we knew there would be a lot of unknowns- specifically with our jobs. As my current role has me overseeing the Hawaii region of our company, I would have to give that up for the move. Recently, I was given the opportunity to continue doing what I love, but overseeing a different region. This offer was very tempting and came with strong potential for greater opportunity in the near future, but there was a condition: I would have to move to a different country. While it would certainly be a beautiful place to spend the next chapter of life, I knew I could not say yes. There is no amount of pay, living situation, or career opportunity that will ever be as important as my wife or my family. I believe it is far greater to do what is right than what is easy. Though I am uncertain of what lies ahead, I do know this: it will be worth it.

I've always loved The Chronicles of Narnia, but re-reading Planet Narnia for class this term evoked a sense of awe for the masterful works that Lewis created. Michael Ward shows just how thoughtful and intentional Lewis was in his writing of these books and (as the title suggests) how deeply the seven heavens of the medieval cosmos are woven into the fabric of the stories. It's a fascinating book and one of my favorite works of literary criticism ever. ⠀

Caveat lector: While Planet Narnia is clear and well-written, it definitely leans toward the academic end of the writing spectrum. Plus, Dr. Ward is highly vocabularized (I, who pride myself on my larger-than-average vocabulary, run across a word I don't know on every third page: aestival, solecism, polysemy, anaphora, po-faced...). Also, the book can't be skimmed. You have to fully attend. If it sounds intriguing but too daunting, there's a shorter, more popular-level version called The Narnia Code (which I've not read) that you might try. ⠀

An End of the Week Question: What do you what the end of your LIFE story to be???? “Finem Respice” is the Latin motto of the ancient Fairbanks family crest and it means: “Consider the End”. I think many Americans get it a bit backwards... they think about what they want do do NOW with their life, and just pursue what things they want for now or in the near future. Not much consideration about the end... except having enough to retire on.

But planning for ETERNITY ???... Few people think of how they want to END their life and how they want to be rewarded in eternity - and work backward from there. As followers of Christ though, our ultimate goal is to hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Not, “Great savings account, way to go with the career moves, nice house, and impressive college degrees.” Now we don’t know how or when our life will end... but we CAN do something about all the NOW’s we have... and allow God to use them to write a new story and HIS ending... It’s not too late to walk higher, to finish stronger, to be a good and faithful servant, who left it all on the field, giving God everything we had every single day, making a difference for eternity.

A beleza de Arwen evoca aquilo que é natural e, por isso, é bela. Nas obras do Tolkien tudo aquilo que sofre uma intervenção indevida acaba se tornando feio. Os próprios Orcs são resultado da modificação do natural para algo distorcido por Morgoth. E eles mesmos se distorciam para intimidarem todos a sua volta. Enquanto a beleza elfica nos apresenta aquilo que naturalmente veio ao mundo e sem mudanças indevidas. Mas claro que, com um bom empenho, as alterações materiais podem ser boas e também belas. Mas essas boas modificações acabam se tornando, no final, um problema ainda maior (Como foi o caso das jóias de Fëanor e o Um anel). Então, a beleza de Arwen é bela por ter sido aquilo que deveria ter sido e imodificada pelas ações malignas.
