What is deforestation?
Trees are an essential part of the earths ecosystem. Forests are not only home to 80% of land animals and plants, they also regulate temparetures, water cycles, as well as the absorbtion of CO2 and other greenhouse gases. Besides that, about 250 million people are living in forests and also depending on them as a source of income.
Nevertheless, the mass destruction - deforestation - continues. Forests still cover about 30% of the worlds land area, but they are disappearing in an alarming fast pace - and all of that for short-term financial gain.
What causes deforestation? >>livestock ranging
farming and plantations (soy, palm, pulp)
>> mining >> unsustainable forest management
>>illegal logging >>fuelwood harvesting >> infrastructre projects (settlements, roads, infrastructre)
>> increased fire incidence and intencity (due to global warming)
>> climate change
Effects of deforestation? >> flooding and erosion
>> water cycles in general
>> life quality decrease (millions of people depend on forests)
>> loss of species
>> loss of forests ability to absorb greenhouse gases like CO2
What can be done in everyday life?
>> avoid products that contain palm oil
>> don't buy anything made of tropical forest wood (like teak)
>> examine the products you buy
>> reduce or stop eating animal products (if you buy animal products, check the source and avoid long transportation, choose organic products if possible)
