I think there is something to be said about the human body, it is designed to do one thing well. That is to heal itself to ensure optimum health. And so that is what I will finally let it do!

If you are able to feed the body with the nutrition it needs to work in harmony then all you need is patience and it will heal. And thus I am done with harsh, abrasive, nasty chemical filled products that strip away my skins natural health instead of fuelling my skin to its best.

And the crazy thing is that I have used all natural products for my body, hair, daughter and home for over 10 years but for my skin, the trouble maker in the family, I havent been!
.
So today marks the start of my all natural and organic skin care regime with @ecobysonya Compost range. There is technically only 4 products in the compost range but I maaaaaay of got over excited and ordered a few more extra goodies 😉 I have claimed it as my (very) early birthday present 😅 #noteventhismonth hahaha

So with my cashew “cheese” sauce experiment yesterday, this was a deliberate effort to experiment with recipes to share with other ppl interested in evolving their diet to a more whole food plant based one. •

Some people can do this by completely overhauling their diet overnight. But for most of us, long term sustainable dietary changes are best done slowly, with finding healthier substitutions for foods we normally eat. For example, I was looking for a dairy free creamy sauce for pasta. My cashew sauce with nutritional yeast for added flavor ...It was great !

#1 Stop saying you’re stressed - no one cares how stressed you are, including yourself. Yes, exam periods are a lot but the more you talk about how stressed you are the more you are going to reinforce that same feeling inside you. Take a deep breath and it’s going to be okay!

Test yourself- 📚 re-reading and copying notes is one of the most ineffective ways of retaining information. Instead, pick a topic, close your book, and see how much you already know. Then go back and fill in the gaps. Then repeat, repeat, repeat.
.
Guilt studying - ✂️unless you are on some limitless drug, no one can study 12 hours straight. Plan in free time and use it wisely! When you’ve lost your concentration it’s only your guilt you are benefiting.
.
Exercise- 🦌studying can really stir up that excess yin energy (sorry, Naturopathic inside joke). Go for a walk, run, yoga, go outside. Your concentration will thank you!
.
Brain food- 🧠 I often get my best studying in early in the morning on an empty stomach. I hold off on eating until I have put 2 concentrated hours in and then prioritize a high fat and protein breakfast to keep my blood sugar stable and brain fog to a minimum.

Make the boring things interesting- 🤔when I’m struggling with a topic I try and find a new way of looking at it that’s interesting to me. Sometimes I’ll search for podcasts on the topic or my favourite health blogs to find ways to relate the material to practice.
.
Meditate- 🧘🏻‍♀️no joke I’m meditating three times a day at this point. It brings me perspective on my studies and helps me get out of that omg my world is going to be over if I don’t pass my exams. Which it so isn’t.

Finally- don’t forget to be freaking proud of yourself and acknowledge everything you do already know!

I mainly would eat my feelings away when I was stressed... and that was more than not! I would "eat my feelings" so to speak rather than coping with WHY I felt the way I did. It was and still is a coping mechanism.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Now, I have read some people say to allow emotional eating to just happen... I am good with that... if in the end, you are going to be HAPPY. See, that's the problem, typically after an emotional eating craze... I feel WORSE.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So rather than grabbing that whole gallon of ice cream (Blue Bell is da bomb btw), I try to do a few things:
1. think about WHY do I want this, why am I feeling stressed (or insert your emotion here) << I always recommend doing this.
2. swap out that eating for a different behavior - like working out or getting a massage.
3. don't change the behavior but change the food to a better option like a protein mug cake or protein cookie.

Look, this has been a work in progress for me... but I do think it is healthy to approach the reason WHY we are wanting to eat our emotions. IT IS UNCOMFORTABLE, as there is usually some repression of feelings going on! Building a healthy relationship with food is important and that’s what I want women to obtain.

Stuffed Cabbage! Dinner was a huge success tonight! The kids loved it so much that they asked if we can have it again tomorrow 😊

Bring to boil a big pot of water. Prepare a bowl of ice water and leave it by the stove.
Meanwhile, sauté half an onion until soft, add 2 lbs of ground beef and season with salt, pepper, garlic powder and a hint of turmeric. Cook for 5 minutes until brown and add 1.5 cups of shredded carrots and half of a bunch of cilantro! Remove the meat off the stove and let it cool.
By now, the water should be boiling. Add the whole cabbage in the boiling pot and allow to cook for roughly 2 mins. Take the cabbage out and gently peel back the cabbage leaves. Soak the leaves in the ice bath. Remove from bath and pat dry with paper towel.
Fill the cabbage leaves with 2 tbsp of the meat mixture close to the lower end of the stem. Fold in the sides and roll up the cabbage leaves. Steam in a steam basket for about 15 mins before serving.

When it comes to your health, standing has been linked to a host of positive benefits. Bonus points if you’re like me jamming and dancing at your desk sometimes 😉 On the reverse side, sitting for too long has been linked to a host of health issues. If you don’t feel like investing in a standing desk yet you can even makeshift your own with boxes!

Now, the goal isn’t to stand the whole day but to strategically combine periods of sitting and standing throughout the work day. Below is a breakdown of some of the studies:

1 - Lowers risk of obesity: One study showed standing burns. 174 more cals per 185 min than sitting (1). Prolonged sitting was also linked to more serious health issues in this study (2)

2 - Standing post-meal can help lower blood sugar levels: In this study, standing post-lunch lead to a 43% less blood glucose spike then the sitting group (3)
.
3 - Lowers your risk of heart disease: Prolong sedentary time to link to an increase risk of heart disease bu up to 147% - yikes! (4)
.
4 - Reduces chronic back pain caused by sitting: This study showed a 32% decrease in chronic back-pain from the stand-sit group over the sit group (5)
.
5 - Sitting less linked to longer life span: One study estimated that reducing the sitting time to 3 hours or less a day would raise America’s life expectancy by 2 years. (6)

6 - Improve mood and energy levels: This study showed the sit-stand group to have improved mood and less fatigue than the sitting group (7)

Although it makes a hell of a better picture than what my self care has looked like lately. ⁣

Today marks day 4 post procedure (PRP Injections at my left cervical facet joints C2-C7) and my pain flared something fierce today. Needless to say, self care was not a luxury today but an absolute necessity; however, there were no jacuzzi or cucumber masks involved. There were however lots of naps, meditations, healthy food prepared by my loving husband, Netflix, and 🐶 snuggles. ⁣

Self care can look different depending on what kind of care you need at a given point in time but what matters is you take the time to take care of yourself. If you don’t care enough to take the time to care for yourself no one else will 😉😘💖.

I tried making pumpkin seed milk with my @almondcow today. Can’t say it’s my favourite milk (I like cashew the best) it is surprisingly creamy and really good for smoothies, sauces and baking. Pumpkin seeds are super high in protein so I’m hoping this milk is as well.

I break my fast with a sald pretty much every day and I usually add at least 1tbsp of chia seeds and/or flax seeds to my salad. On the average day I have 1 tbsp of each. I use a lot of turmeric but to better absprb the curcumin in turmeric, you need fat and black pepper. A salad dressing is an easy, delicious way to get some turmeric in your life.

Try this simple Walnut Turmeric Dressing. You can play around and use whatever nuts you prefer. I use almonds and walnuts mostly.

1 tbsp walnut butter
1 tsp organic turmeric
1 tbsp dijon mustard
6 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 tsp raw honey (you may want to leave this out if you on a strict diabetes reversal regimen)
1/4 tsp black pepper
2-3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
Pinch of sea salt
1/5 tsp granulated garlic
1/5 tsp ground ginger

You can use a good organic nut butter or just throw some walnuts in a blender with the apple cider vinegar and oil.
Play around with the quantities to suit your own taste.

I just completed a resting metabolic rate test and wow! I have been under eating by a significant amount for too long. I was starting to feel like the effort I was putting in at the gym wasn’t paying off at the rate I expected, and of course it’s not when I am underfed and my body is going into survival mode. Women especially are so convinced that they can achieve all of their fitness goals with a low-calorie diet but that is absolutely 100% not true. My current goal is to get stronger and build lean muscle mass, and in order to build mass you obviously have to be in a calorie surplus. I have been using online calculations to estimate my metabolic rate so I could drive my diet, and I cannot encourage getting a metabolic rate test enough if this kind of journey is something you’re interested in. I got mine done through @bodyspec and they have a lot of mobile locations, though I’m not entirely sure if they operate outside of California. Research is fun! Keep bringing on the blueberries🥰. The easiest dessert you’ll ever make - macadamia nuts, roughly chopped, blueberries and melted chocolate. Mix them all in a bowl, grab a cookie scoop, and scoop them out on a cookie sheet. Put them in the freezer till the hold and you can keep them there or transfer them to the fridge. I did because the blueberries froze and hurt my teeth hahah .

Either way we know blueberries are gonna make your skin look good (antioxidants !!) but These macadmeia buts are the key. Like that salty crunchy is auhhhmazing. They have B1 and magensium. B1 helps the body use carbohydrates and helps with use of electrolytes in the body which is why it’s great for athletes to munch on. .

Potassium is an important mineral and electrolyte for our bodies. It helps control blood pressure, transports nutrients into our cells, and supports healthy nerve and muscle function. The adequate intake for potassium is 4,700 mg for adults, but most people don’t get enough through diet alone.

So why a picture of avocados on a post about potassium? Shouldn't it be bananas up there?? 🍌 Honestly, bananas are pretty far down on the list of foods with the highest potassium 😂. Sweet potatoes, a cup of broccoli, or my favorite, the avocado all trump the banana when it comes to potassium. Just HALF of an avocado would give you 10% of your daily potassium needs, or 487 mg. A medium banana, well known for it’s potassium, contains just 9%, or 422 mg. Eat a whole avocado and you’ve just gotten 20%, (twice that of a banana) of your daily potassium needs!

Avocados have many other health benefits too! They are loaded with good fats and are a great source of vitamin K and folate. They have the highest concentration of brain protecting antioxidants of any fruit or vegetable. 🧠 They are low in sodium, have almost zero sugar, and keep you full longer! Today i have to get to work super early and so it's a grab and go breakfast. Luckily I have some of these blueberry and lemon oat bars in the fridge; they are enriched with chia and flaxseed for omega-3s, fibre and protein and blueberries for my antioxidant boost.
