Dandelion also known as 'tooth of the lion' is a herbaceous edible plant that has been used for many centuries. There's a reason why it has survived and maintained within our diet. Studies have shown that it is a rich source of vitamins and minerals. The greens in particular, have the highest vitamin A content of all greens. Dandelions can also be used as an excellent source of detoxification. They are know to help flush out excess water and because of its relatively high amounts of choline, they are such an important nutrient for the liver. Impressive right? You can find this medicinal, nutrient rich food every Wednesday at our market from 8:30 AM - 1:30 PM°

70% of us are overweight. And 84% of our $3.2 trillion in health care costs are spent on chronic disease that is preventable by DIET.⠀

There is a multi-trillion dollar global food industry (save some rebels out there fighting the good fight) that is growing, processing, manufacturing, marketing, and serving food like substances that are making us sick and fat.⠀

99% of government food subsidies go toward supporting commodity crops—corn, wheat and soy—the building blocks of processed foods. ⠀

By 2040, 100% of our federal tax revenue will be needed to pay for chronic disease caused by our polices and food system.⠀

The food industry spends $10 billion on marketing junk food to our kids every year. This unregulated food marketing targets not only children but the underserved, and minorities as well, pushing the industrial foods responsible for our epidemic of childhood obesity and racial disparities in health. ⠀

We need to transform our food system. ⠀

We vote with our forks three times a day and TOGETHER we can reclaim our health, one forkful at a time.⠀

Always an honor to get to introduce Senator Debbie Stabenow, who wowed the Local Food Summit audience with a rundown of all of the amazing things that she got into the 2018 Farm Bill (a truly bipartisan effort). Did you know the Farm Bill is the one piece of legislation passed that actually directly includes climate change? She inspires me! -#foodsystemleader #formermayor #senatorstabenow #foodpolicy

This is the kind of knowledge that is so important to raise awareness about because it's linked to a systemic issue that causes tremendous suffering (physical, psychological, emotional, etc.) in our society.
. .
It's profitable to produce cheaper “food like” products and formulate them to be addictive for consumers. It’s also lucrative for the corrupt pharmaceutical industry to treat diet related illness. Nonetheless, the cost of high quality health is priceless and needs to be in our own control. It is the birth right of kids, for example, to grow up with enough health to be able to move and play freely (instead of suffering from obesity, low self-esteem, or even autoimmune disease that has been associated with lethal chemicals in our food system). We need to improve the food system ASAP.

Listened to an incredibly interesting, albeit distinctly offensive, talk that centered around World Hunger; one of my favorite slides from this presentation was how he broke down that everything is made up of DNA! There are people out there, with no scientific/nutrition knowledge or training, attempting to sell you things based on buzz words like “all natural, chemical free, etc” *this just in*: everything you eat is a chemical. Plants literally have #phytochemicals! That’s a good thing!
You’re probably wondering what my point is now so I’ll get to it: many decisions about advertising food and nutrition are made to mislead consumers in the most legal way possible so that you’ll spend your money on whatever product they want you to buy, whether it’s a company claiming that glyphosate is completely safe or that GE foods will make you grow two heads. 🥦🥑🥒
As consumers, we need to make sure that we make informed decisions that are based on #facts and #health! But we also must make sure we hold the industry behind these decisions accountable. How? Do your research and *VOTE WITH YOUR MONEY*!! If profits go down, companies listen .

#GeorgeWashingtonCarver was one of the most prominent scientists and inventors of his time. He is famous for improving the lives of disadvantaged farmers through new farming methods. He devised over 100 products using one major crop—the peanut 🥜 —creating dyes, plastics, fuel and more. In his experiments, he also discovered how to restore soil health by using peanuts in crop-rotation. ♻️🌱 #foodsystem #foodaccess #supportlocal #leadership#blackhistory #blackhistorymonth #blackhistoryeveryday#blackhistorymatters #community #foodjustice #foodactivist#foodentrepreneur #entrepreneurship #agriculture#urbanagriculture #foodpolicy#regenerativeagriculture#thinkregeneratively#healthysoils#sustainability

This #BlackHistoryMonth, we recognize the many Black inventors who helped pave the way to the future of food we know today, as well as the entrepreneurs who continue to trailblaze for our Good Food movement. 🌱

This week, we recognize #AbbyFisher who ran a preserves business in the late 1800s. She was one of the first African Americans to publish a cookbook. "What Mrs. Fisher Knows About Southern Cooking" is recognized as "a central work of American cookery," preserving the food ways created by African-American women who provided for their families while cooking for the wealthy households of the South. #BlackHistoryMonth

This #ValentinesDay, we’re crushing hard on all the food #changemakers at @ucberkeleyfood and @rfrstories Hungry for Change event last week❣️ We loved hearing all the stories that informed how these leaders got involved with the Good Food movement. Our very own Policy Director Breanna Hawkins told the story of her Grandfather’s experience as a sharecropper in rural Alabama. She shared how he eventually had to give up his dream of owning a farm due to the discriminatory lending practices, land takings and deep disparities of farm ownership that still exist today. Yet his love for nourishing people and the planet lives on in her work to transform communities, systems and policies to restore the planet and create more equitable opportunities for the food leaders of the future ✨🌱🌎 together, we can build a better, brighter food system. Thanks for the inspiration changemakers!
Food friends, you look RADISHING today!! Happy ❤️ Day to all of our local food lovers!! .

A long post with links, and an important discussion about national food policy in Canada and Rethinking Canada's Food System, https://bit.ly/2BBdLi6:
Speakers:
Crystal MacKay, President of the Cdn Centre for Food Integrity. www.foodintegrity.ca/education/speakers-bureau/meet-our.../crystal-mackay/, founded in Toronto in 1991 with Mayor Art Eggleton and Councillor Jack Layton. Back then, they worked to allow hens in Toronto and better lunches to reduce hunger. There are 300 or more centres around the world today. But, Toronto, is still the highest in Canada not eating well. Therefore, we need safe water, air quality and farmland. Food is interconnected with everything, from availability and where it comes from and how to have enough for everyone.
Cecilia Rocha in Etobicoke, Director of School of Nutrition and Researcher at the Centre for Studies in Food Security at Ryerson University, https://www.ryerson.ca/nutrition/people/faculty/cecilia-rocha/:
Likes the new Food Guide and more guides around the world are food and nutrient based.
Lori Stahlbrand, PhD, Food Policy Specialist for the City of Toronto's Food Stretegy Team responsible for the Toronto Food Policy Council, tfpc.to/news/lori-stahlbrand-joins-the-tfpc-toronto-food-strategy-team:
Melana Roberts, Chair of Food Secure Canada and Co-Chair of the Toronto Food Youth Policy Council, https://bringfoodhome.com/speakers/5279/: Works on Urban Agriculture issues and getting young people involved in food policy. Young people need a place at the table to make policy decisions on food that impact their lives every day. Farm to table policy is important as the average farmer is 55 or older. The food guide opens discussion about how to eat, who to eat with, community and a positive culture around food. Food Secure Canada is a Toronto group leading the way for youth in this area and is the world's first youth policy council.

KANSAS FRIENDS, PLEASE JOIN ME AND @kchealthykids IN ADVOCATING FOR LOWER SALES TAX ON GROCERIES IN KS
.
Dear #ksleg,
Kansans pay the highest sales tax on food in the nation.* An average family of four spends about $1,100 on groceries each month. In most places, Kansans pay around 10% in state and local taxes, which adds up to $100 every month, $1,200 a year. It's time to make a change. Please support House Bill 2261 and Senate Bill 76!

Looking through the final version of the Cardinia Food Strategy brings me so much joy!
Launched last week, the the Cardinia Shire’s vision is a healthy, delicious, sustainable and fair food system for all its residents.
Its key objective is increased access to affordable, healthy food by 2026.
How is it going to achieve this?
1. Protect and utilise fertile land as a source of fresh food for current and future generations
2. Grow a vibrant local food economy which supports growers and enables people to access locally produced food
3. Enhance food knowledge, skills and culture within schools, workplaces, clubs and the wider community
4. Reduce and divert food waste from landfill and reuse water to grow
All it is at this stage is just words on paper. But this document provides direction. It shows leadership. It shows the need to work across policy area’s instead of just sticking to the usual silos. It shows what can happen when a Council talks to their community and really listens to what they want.
This document was the result of 2 years work with input from over 500 people through kitchen table conversations.
I share this here because I believe that all councils have a responsibility for prioritising a similar vision for their residents.
Talk to your local Councillor about why you believe your council would greatly benefit if they invested in more local food systems.
The more we speak up, the greater chance we have of being heard.
Have you heard of the Food Recovery Hierarchy? 🥒

It is a set of guidelines that prioritizes actions organizations can take to prevent and divert wasted food. Swipe left 👀 👉🏽 to view the ‘Hierarchy to Reduce food Waste and Grow Community’ by @ilsr74 . 🥦

As much as we believe in the benefits of composting, we also believe that good edible food should be used to feed people first. 🍅
We’ve tagged local organizations that are doing just that. Check them out and support fighting food waste. ✊🏽

Can our Religious Values Help Fight Climate Change?
You’re probably already familiar with the many connections between industrial animal agriculture and climate change, but you may be less familiar with their link to religious organizations. Faith organizations have published dozens of religious statements on how their spirituality calls them to fight climate change. And religious communities can make excellent forums to discuss the connection between farmed animals and climate change. Read more in our latest blog post. Link in Profile.

#HenryBlair was one of the first African American inventors to receive a patent. His first invention was the seed-planter, patented on October 14, 1834, which allowed farmers to plant more corn using less labor in a smaller amount of time. A few years later, he obtained his second patent, for a cotton planter, on August 31, 1836. #BlackHistoryMonth

I’m not a dreamer, I’m a believer!

I’m not a dreamer, I’m a believer!

This past Sunday, dozens of community members and community organizations joined in celebration as Best Market re-opened its doors as Skid Row People’s Market, a small grocery store focused on real food and community building.

The store recently underwent major renovations and re-branding to become the first-of-its-kind grocery store and deli creating access to fresh produce and healthy prepared foods for the Skid Row neighborhood, an extremely low-income neighborhood in Downtown Los Angeles and often referred to as a “food desert.” The store transformation was led by second-generation storeowner Danny Park, whose family has owned and operated the market as a convenience store for 24 years.

At the Opening Ceremony, Linda Leigh, activist and member of LA Community Action Network's Skid Row Food and Wellness Collaborative, opened the ceremony with a Navajo prayer as a way to ground and connect attendees to one another and the land. The community then participated in a walking meditation to San Julian Park, singing together to and from the park. Upon returning to the store, Danny recognized market staff and community members for their role in the transformation, as well as local organizations working on food access. Chamsori, a traditional Korean drumming group, performed and ceremoniously blessed the store, spilling into the corner outside the store and rallying everyone to collectively run toward the storefront with the intention of sending good luck to the space. The event ended with a potluck of food provided by Skid Row Coffee and the Park family, the community and other participating organizations.

Click the link in our bio to read more about the Opening Ceremony and journey of Skid Row People’s Market.
For now, we’ll leave you with the same quote that is painted on the walls of Skid Row People’s Market: “Food is medicine…not only for the body but also for the soul and the spiritual connection to history, ancestors, and the land.” #WinonaLaDuke
Absolute favourite.

During our short stay, we were luckily enough to be welcomed by the gentleman on the right’s family and close friends (personal choice not to disclose his name). Between chopping fresh coconuts from his backyard, and playing UNO with his two sons, he shared some insights on Cuba’s food politics. Specifically, on the Cuban food ration and distribution system— the Libreta.
.
First introduced in 1962, the Libreta is a system that establishes how much, and how frequent, each person is allowed to buy food and supplies at subsidized prices. Issued yearly by Cuba’s Control Office for Distribution of Supplies (OFICODA), the Libreta booklet contains information on every individual in a household, including: the exact number of individuals, genders, age groups and dietary indications.
.
Although there are frequent shortages and delayed distributions on soft commodities (including rice, eggs, and sugar) the Cuban government argues that this method of distribution serves to ensure each citizen is entitled to a minimum intake of food. What was implemented as a temporary measure, has now lasted for more than 50 years. The government often blames these shortages on the economic embargo by the United States. Forcing Cuba to import large quantities of food from Vietnam, China and Thailand.
.
When asked (careful not to offend) how we can contribute/ what he would like as a token of our appreciation for his hospitality, he immediately refused. After some persistence, he finally gave in and expressed that a bag of candy from his local bodega would suffice. The packaged candy that he chose resembled Jujubes—that of which was visibly stuck together and hard. He admitted that although this was not the best candy, he explained that he had not been in the position to freely spend money on something so trivial as candy for quite some time.
.
On our last night of stay, his wife and friends set out a spread consisting of slow roasted meats, fried fish, stewed vegetables, baked beans with rice, and of course, sweet plantains. For desert: Jujubes served on a platter—sharing his chosen gift with everyone.
