(2) The Happy Diarist takes San Francisco!
The legendary Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory located in San Francisco’s Chinatown has been making custom fortune cookies by hand since 1962. The small factory/bakery is definitely a hidden gem tucked away in a seemingly overlooked alley. I recommend to have on hand exact directions because even with them finding the spot was a little tricky. As soon as you turn the corner into the alley the sweet smell of warm cookies hits your nose before you even see the store! A small line of people waiting to order can be spotted right outside the lantern-covered entrance. One of the employees hands out an abundant amount of flat, freshly made cookies to sample. The shop makes up to 10,000 cookies a day on a cast iron rotating griddle wheel that cranks out the delicate wafers before your eyes. If you’re interested in creating your custom fortunes (which why wouldn’t you be?? So cool!) they sell a mini take out box with two custom-fortunes for $1.50. There’s a side table with pens and strips of paper where you can write whatever you’d like! Once you’ve finished writing your prophecies, the strips of paper are handed to the women making the cookies. I purchased a few boxes to bring back home as souvenirs. So I wouldn’t forget what box was which, I added a name or number on the outside with the same pen I used to fill out my fortunes. Once ready the boxes are packed into a cute reusable bag with the shop’s logo.
THE COOKIES ARE PHENOMENAL! The best darn fortune cookies I’ve ever had, sweet and addicting! This was one of my favorite activities from my trip. The whole experience is so fun and the delicious cookies are so worth the little scavenger hunt for the shop. Please do yourself a favor and make some time to visit this treasure of a place. Happy eating! 🙂🥠
