My favorite sight on the kitchen counter: humble ingredients transforming into life and health-giving foods! 🥥Coconut milk getting friendly with probiotics, giving those wonderful little bugs a place to multiply and create tangy yogurt! Our behavior, digestion, mood, cravings, hormones, fatty acid metabolism; every part of us lives in complete interdependence with bacteria. Change the microbiome, change your health! To say I’m fascinated with the microbiome and its effect on human health and behavior would be an understatement. 🥕Speaking of probiotics! I love making my own fermented veggies at home, particularly some variation of kimchi. Recipe to come! 🧠Did you know fermented foods are a dietary source of GABA? GABA is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in our body. It helps reduce anxiety, helps us manage stress in situations of fear, and increases decision making in high-pressure situations. Some years ago, when I had anxiety, supplementing GABA was game-changing (along with exercise). My rumination faded. Trouble sleeping? GABA can also help. (Take note, amount of GABA in fermented foods varies dependent on the strain of bacteria. Just keep note how you feel.) 🥦Last but certainly not least—broccoli seeds 🌱sprouting into powerful detox medicine! Amongst their many superpowers, they activate the Nrf2 pathway, a detox & antioxidant pathway associated with regulating thousands of enzymes. One example: people given broccoli sprout extract excrete large amounts of benzene (an air pollutant and known carcinogen found in cigarette smoke and car exhaust). This is a safe and inexpensive way to limit the negative effects of this common human health concern. ❣️Activation of the Nrf2 pathway also has positive effects on diseases of inflammation such as heart disease & neurodegenerative diseases!
Acid reflux? Ulcers? Broccoli sprouts have been shown to help fight off a common culprit in these conditions-H. pylori infection. Particularly in treatment-resistant/recurring cases, it’s a safe and viable option.
Do you make your own kimchi?! Share if so, everyone always does it differently!
