Dietary Vitamin D is absorbed in the small intestine especially in the jejunum and ileum, two sites particularly affected by Crohn’s disease, an Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

Vitamin D has very important benefits in digestive diseases like Crohn’s

1️⃣Vitamin D enhances the epithelial barrier - a major mechanism in IBD is a defective or damaged epithelial barrier

2️⃣Vitamin D enhances antimicrobial peptides which help decrease pathogenic/dysbiotic bacteria - this is a major feature of IBD

3️⃣Vitamin D enhances bacterial diversity in the gut - Patients with IBD have reduced bacterial diversity .
Patients with Crohn’s who have low vitamin D levels but achieve normal vitamin D levels (75-80nmol/L) with supplementation have been shown to have:

Decreased hospitalizations
Decreased surgeries
Decreased risk of cancer
Decreased disease activity
Decreased fatigue
Improved strength

How does stress affect gut health?

In short, in so many interconnected ways!
.
Stress hormones, such as epinephrine (adrenaline) affects:
- mobility of the gut
- changes the stomach acid levels
- impacts the immune system present in the gastrointestinal tract
- increases leaky gut
- and increases the growth of opportunistic bacteria.
.
This might sound like just a list, but the interesting and complicated thing is that all these changes interact.
.
For example:
- by changing the mobility of the gut, the level of different microbes change.
- AND if you decrease stomach acid secretion the small intestine isn't very acidic anymore, and this means that it's an environment that the bacteria (that belong in the large intestine) will like. This leads to the bacteria living where they're not suppose to live. It's a condition called SIBO or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. Have you ever heard of it?
- Another interesting connection I think is that stress impacts the mucosal (innate) immune system in the gut, but stress also increases leaky gut which goes onto stimulate the bodies (adaptive) immune system.

I was reading something about the menopause this weekend and itas comparison for men is a mid life crisis ... they were saying each was as bad as each other just that they athinka one is chemical and ahormonesa and the other is simply amindseta. Epigenetics is showing us nothing is set in stone, life shows us that there is nothing to be afraid of but life itself and itas only when we learn to trust that a bit more than we fear that we allow life to work for us not to us. In functional medicine the mind and body are connected all we have to do is seek connection with ourselves not distraction and we will stay well for longer.
Age is of course just a number and we are far more in control of how we age than we like to think we are ... but we have to continually do the work if we are to age well and age without having to aabstaina from whatever makes us glad to be alive.
I have personally never done drugs nor smoked mainly because both have caused sufficient atraumaa in my family and that fear kept me safely away from them until I was able to know what makes me glad to be alive and how to live my life naturally ... that is not to say I didnat have health conditions ...but it kept me away from them until I unravelled my onion layers enough to regulate my own nervous system and buy into a belief system that serves me well.
Whatever your thoughts are about ageing ..you do have more control than you think and itas much more about heart and soul than it is mind over matter and the secret often lies in the every day choices we make with an eye on our ever constant changing perceptions and our ability to trust that little bit more than we fear whilst enjoying the views along the way. Diet and exercise help but your belief system is fundamental.

It is becoming a well known ‘theory’ that nothing is set in stone until we decide it is and this theory is ‘dismissing’ our ability to blame our ‘genes’ when something happens to us be that good or bad ...what is even more liberating is the fact that our health both physical and emotional is much more about environment than ‘inheritance’ ... fabulous news if our world works on all cylinders a sobering thought if we have ‘work’ to do in order to live the life of our dreams not the one our fears.
There is a theory that says habits take 21 days to make and equally shift but that relies on us having a regulated nervous system underneath ...if we don’t the onion layers are more complicated.
A ‘yogi’ did a post today about being restless and how when we are unable to get things done or we are procrastinating ...life is suggesting to us that we are beginning to seek avoidance not connection with ourselves and it’s time to sit down and get real and honest ...when we do we often find it’s our fear running the show and we need to shift our operating system because all too often it’s not failure we fear but that we will be far more successful than we could ever imagine and that responsibility is far scarier than accepting we are ‘never enough’ .... ‘what if we fail but darling what if we fly’ ... There is a Muriel on the wall of the gym I go to that says ‘Whether you believe you can or believe you can’t you are right’ .... your perception now creates both your body chemistry and your reality of tomorrow and the more you seek joy the more it seeks you and that then becomes a hard habit to break but one worth believing in.

Research shows that this is especially true for mental illness. There is a HUGE connection between the gut and the brain, and the research is fascinating (to me, anyway). Poor diet can throw your gut bacteria out of WHACK which then sets off all the wrong kind of signals to your brain. The result? Anxiety. Depression. Headaches.
Part of the healing process should always be to clean up your diet and include probiotic, and probiotic foods to rebalance your gut bacteria.

Thoughts affect chemical changes in the body.
Positive thinking can produce chemicals in the brain and cells of the central nervous system, which then affects the immune system too.
This can produce NK cells, T cells and white blood cells which can destroy certain types of illness and fight bacteria and viruses to keep us healthy and resilient.

I recently had a conversation with someone who has always made me feel inadequate and when I told them I finally set myself free from their shadow and I knew that they would never hold that power over me again. It was not a conversation I regret and it’s a perception I now gratefully no longer have.
Yesterday I ran past a man I’ve not seen since I was 20 when he kicked me out of my home because I had been made redundant and he did not want a tennant who was not ‘reliable’. I was vulnerable at the time and that memory haunted me with shame for years even tho it was circumstance not design that I found myself on the ‘streets’ overnight. I was lucky and found a bedsit until I sorted myself out but as we watched a movie last night I was reminded of how many sliding doors life gives us and how precarious a line we often walk between trusting and fearing life itself. The movie was a powerful reminder of our perceptions and belief systems and how life can change in an instant and sometimes it’s out of our control.
My experiences in life have definitely shaped the person I am today and whilst some hurt at the time I am grateful I walked those fine lines with luck on my side.
As I ran past the man who at one time haunted me with shame I was reminded of how sometimes it’s the gifts in ugly packaging that are the greatest gifts of all.
They say it’s never what happens that defines us but how we choose to respond and whilst we can never control how others perceive us or react to life themselves we can always choose how we perceive our world and we can always choose to accept what is but play it forward well simply by choosing to allow ourselves to be enough just as we are and to trust that little bit more than we fear. Shame,guilt,fear and resentment are the biggest triggers of ‘dis-ease’ ... trust and a grateful heart are a magnet to miracles. Life will always have it’s storms and it’s waves, resilience once learnt gives us the gift that keeps on giving.
No idea why I had a blast from the past yesterday but am grateful for becoming who I am today and perhaps it’s just with every day we get the opportunity to be better than we were the day before.

Off to the Gold Coast for a week in a couple of days so the usual cook up before heading off has started. We eat in such a unique way at the mo that I find it easier to just prep meals beforehand. Much less stressful for everyone 🤣 Just about got the meals under control so I've turned my focus to snacks.

Enter "Not Quite Honey Joys"

Made with Einkorn Flakes & organic coconut flakes instead of cornflakes making them a much healthier & nutritious option. You can use local raw honey or rice malt syrup & I just subbed the butter for organic coconut oil.

Ingredients:
2 cups Einkorn Flakes
2 cups organic coconut flakes
90g organic coconut oil
2 tbspn raw honey or rice malt syrup

Method:
Melt the wet ingredients, add in the dry ingredients, spoon into patty pans & bake at 150 for 10 mins.

Girls have already snuck one & declared them as being "scrum-diddly-umptious"! I'll take that as a win 🙌

The strain of probiotic that was used is called lactobacillus rhamnosus. Interestingly, this probiotic is usually used to treat or prevent eczema, and the primary aim of the study was just that - to see whether they could prevent eczema in the child that were born.

But what they also observed was the depression and anxiety symptoms were decreased in women taking this probiotic.

Getting a food sensitivity test makes life so much easier! At our center, we offer food sensitivity and allergy testing to remove the guess work out of which foods are causing you grief! 😩 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Food sensitivities are caused by #IgG antibodies. These are very different from a food “allergy” response which is #IgE mediated. IgE antibodies are found throughout the body and are associated with allergic reactions; they are more rapid often causing a reaction immediately or 20 minutes to an hour. One example of this is anaphylaxis in the case of a peanut allergy.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I was reading something today about how people talk about never having enough time and using it as an excuse for not responding to messages and calls and how if someone or something is important you will make time for it ...and therefore time is not the problem our priorities sometimes are.
It’s a viewpoint that can leave those that are not aligned with themselves feeling ‘less than’ especially when they know most people are surgically attached to social media and their phone.
Life is short and our ability to value who and what is important requires us to constantly evaluate our own agenda in life and our own ‘why’ and when we do that we find that we are far more honest with our selves, our words and our intentions and in turn those that matter will never mind and those that mind will cease to matter. When our energy is honest our intentions are always received with sincerity.
A life well lived does not have to include abstinence but it does require us to be true to ourselves and know that the truth always finds its way. May your Saturday allow you the time to make the most of what and who matter in your world and may you know that when you are in alignment with you, there is always time for wine.

Here's the first ever study showing that probiotics may prevent or treat postnatal depression.

The strain of probiotic that was used is called lactobacillus rhamnosus. Interestingly, this probiotic is usually used to treat or prevent eczema, and the primary aim of the study was just that - to see whether they could prevent eczema in the child that were born.

Living from the heart is something that leaves us often vulnerable to pain and for many this risk is too great and instead they seek distraction from themselves and validation outside of themselves to prove their underlying belief system which is that they are never quite enough ..no matter how hard they work nor how good life looks to the outside world ... not a disaster if we do it for a while potentially leathel if it’s a belief system that is passed down from one generation to the next.
For many ‘keep calm and carry on’ and ‘mind over matter’ kept the proverbial wolf from the door but these same people are now passing down a belief system that being honest about how we feel is in some way a weakness and instead the body shows the ‘dis-ease’ not just the mind.
Courage is however often the superpower we find when we are on our knees and it is perhaps where the phrase ‘you have to allow the darkness in order to allow the light to get in’ comes from.
There are many gurus available to us now and there are many new ways of ‘thinking’ and living our lives well but no matter where we search for our answers comes down to us and our own dreams and perceptions of the now. Nobody else is living our lives, nobody knows how we really feel and we are the one person who is going to be with us all of our lives so when we find the courage to listen our own heart and soul we also find the wisdom we needed all along ...we are enough just as we are but when we know better we can choose to do better and with this we begin to make the most important connection of all..our gut,brain one and we begin to have a perception that makes better choices for us and we learn to live our own lives as only we can ...trust yourself you will find the courage you need to notice the signposts that enable you to be both resilient and brave and live the life of your dreams not your fears.

I read a post last night from a concerned parent who was struggling with their child and them wanting to go to school... it always amazes me how many people use social media to solve big problems in their life and it is is perhaps indicative of how hard it is to get help in life and how desperate people are becoming to be heard and seen.
In the thread most people were looking to blame someone as to why the ‘system’was not working ...some were empathetic with the mother others judgemental and yet the mother fundamentally didn’t feel she had a voice or was being heard about what was really going on for her son and she felt all the system wanted was for them to tick the right boxes. Money was given as the reason why they needed to tick boxes.
Education is of course important in all our lives, being curious is what helps us find out what we are good at and in turn being good at something enables us to create the revenue we need to live the life we love not the one we fear ...at the root of this however is our ability to feel ‘enough’ just as we are ...and create a foundation that allows us to evolve and grow ....turns out the mind can be our biggest ‘hurdle’ and when we operate from fear we go into overwhelm and seek distraction not connection.
In the past we have bought into the belief system that our mind is our power but when our mind is our master not our servant we create problems that sabotage our success and this includes our ability to ‘learn’ and absorb new ways of thinking. When our gut,brain connection is strong our mind becomes our servant and our heart and soul our guide and with this we get clarity of mind and wellness of body and we remain open to ‘learning’. Connecting the right dots enables us to allow more than we control and when we get it right we teach have the resilience to ride the waves and weather the storms naturally and with the ability to trust just that little more than they fear and to know when to ask for help and when to stand alone. There is so much strength in our vulnerability especially when we know that when we are truly in alignment with ourselves we make better choices and we get to live the life we love not the one we fear.

I would add an extra set of hands around the navel (gut)... Despite what the 'mainstream' overculture, or the new age overculture, or your tantra overculture might tell you:

NONE of these 'brains' is more important, more valuable, or more right than any of the others!

It's all about learning to listen to each (all) of them, and building relationships *between* then, so we can respond to life FULLY.

Can't see the #Fitness for the trees. Fine tuned my #IntuitiveSkills yesterday. Saw this ad for a multi-station home gym and followed it up. Price was right, but I second guessed myself on the drive up. "Do I really need this? Do I really want another one of these?" Usually when I ask myself a question, someone always answers. This time the voice said, "How did it feel when you saw the ad? What made you respond?" I thought about it, and remembered that it was like a burst of sudden energy in me; as some would say, it #LitMeUp. I felt it in my Gut, my Heart, and my Skull, also along the surface of my arms, a brief tingling. Turned out to be a really good thing. The machine was "As New", like they said in the ad and when I asked him about the Beer Keg he had in the garage near it, he gave me it's twin from the back yard, said it would save him having to move it yet again with everything else. They were downsizing you see. 9 gallon Beer kegs are rare these days and I just happen to need one to make my Laos Style Sauna. The voice pointed that out to me on the drive home and reminded me of each sensation associated with my intuition. Science is now beginning to refer to these physical signals as the #GutBrain and the #HeartBrain respectively and many scholars are discussing human evolution and how important these systems were for our survival. Now if I can learn to recognize it next time I shall have crossed fully into the next level. Yeeeeasss!💪🙏💓

It was suggested to me today by someone that in hearing how someone else was living their life they were going to withdraw their ‘financial support’ of their lifestyle my response was that if you want to control someone that’s a perfect way to do it but if you want to have a relationship with someone then you need to allow them to both make their own mistakes and choose their own lifestyle ... the conversation reminded me of how important it is to love someone where they are not where it’s convenient for us for them to be or we think they should be ...it also reminded me of how so many people use ‘money’ to control others.
Having our own belief system and our own boundaries are vital if we are to take responsibility for our lives and when we do it we find that sometimes there are those that find it difficult making the adjustment to who we really are especially if we somehow get lost along the way and during that time we allowed them to define the boundaries or we had none !
Trusting ourselves is vital to our wellbeing but being honest with ourselves gives us the freedom to be the best version of ourselves, allows us to be enough just as we are and ensures that we are surrounded by people that not only see and hear us but make us feel safe enough to always be the best version of us we can be.
Know yourself enough to know how feeling enough really feels and make sure you remain wise enough to to know that how others judge you is a reflection of them but your perception of them is always an awareness of yourself.

I did a HITT class this morning and then did my usual climb up the face of the hill. As I took a picture at the bottom it was exactly 11:11 and at the time I was thinking about how life begins to start working for us not to us when we trust just that little bit more than we fear ...for me this week there have been too many ‘serendipity’s’ in my life for me not to be in a place where I agree with this completely our instinct is powerful when we trust it and we take self responsibility for our lives. As I got to the top of the hill I bumped into a man who told me I looked fitter than the dog ...always makes a girls day and as I enjoyed the views at the top I was reminded of just how amazing a bit of sunshine can make us feel and it’s in those moments that we feel truly glad to be alive.
I am very aware that there are plenty of people who fear the way life is moving right now and what lies ahead for the human race and our society as a whole...I’m equally aware our perception now creates both our body chemistry and reality of tomorrow.
Steve Jobs achieved a lot in his lifetime and yet in his death it is obvious his life was more complex behind the scenes than it was in his business life.
There is always a very fine line between allowing our fears but trusting that little bit more and dropping into overwhelm....being aware of ourselves doing it is sometimes all we need to do to shift the balance before it gets more complicated to unravel.
As I got home I had another moment of serendipity and another opportunity to play what is forward in a way that works for me ... it goes without doubt I will be ceasing the moment. I hope you know when to trust your instinct more than your fears because when you do life has a habit of meeting you half way and the hard work dissipates to a life of working smarter and trusting that being good at what we do is enough to create a life we love and to love the life we live. It’s simple but the mind has a habit of making it complicated.

The interesting thing with this whole gut brain connection story, is that the brain and gut have bidirectional communication. The brain talks to the gut and the gut talks to the brain. .
The gut and brain communicate through the vagus nerve, which sends signals from the enteric nervous system (the nervous system of the gastrointestinal tract) to the brain, and vice versus.

In the past, they thought that it was the brain that was doing most of the talking, but in fact the latest research suggests that 90% of the talking is done by the gut! Amazing huh?

I had a meeting yesterday with a company where the average age of staff was about 24 and when they said they would like my wisdom to help them grow I was slightly shocked but mostly delighted. It’s seemingly rare these days where our age is considered an advantage to helping a new company grow because in an age of ‘AI’ many think we can just get technology to do the job of what we have learnt as humans along the way ..turns out communication and true connection still has a place.
As I left my meeting and headed home I was thinking about the conversation I had with one of the staff who had told me I was just what they needed right now and couldn’t thank me enough for coming into their ‘world’ they already had a new perception and they would be doing something for themselves as a result ...sometimes serendipity is a powerful force.
As we had a celebration dinner last night to honour an achievement of one of the boys I was really conscious how quickly time goes and how one minute you are knee deep in sleepless nights and nappies and the next you are potentially amongst sleepless nights and young adults living their own lives ....there is no algorithm for this but there is self alignment and resilience .... because when you are truly aligned with you from cell to soul you trust just that bit more than you fear and you know that when you are reaching for the stars but keeping your feet on the ground, life will meet you half way and before you know it you will be living a life that feels good on the inside as well as looking amazing from the outside ...it is a choice but it’s also down to perceptions and an ability to trust more than you know and that requires plenty of heart and soul and a lot less control. Choose less manipulation and more alignment because when you trust more than you control you allow more than you resist.

Well actually it's a bit more complicated than that. It is true, but so is the vice versa. i.e. an unhealthy gut can be caused by (the the high levels of stress hormones often involved in) depression and anxiety. I suppose it's really the old chicken and the egg story. What came first?

The interesting thing with this whole gut brain connection story, is that the brain and gut have bidirectional communication. The brain talks to the gut and the gut talks to the brain. .
The gut and brain communicate through the vagus nerve, which sends signals from the enteric nervous system (the nervous system of the gastrointestinal tract) to the brain, and vice versus.

In the past, they thought that it was the brain that was doing most of the talking, but in fact the latest research suggests that 90% of the talking is done by the gut! Amazing huh?

I'm in London today and my journey started with a delayed train...nothing I could do but sit in the sun and enjoy the 'moment' ..as I listened to others taking the philosophical approach to not letting it make the day get off on the wrong foot I am reminded how easy it would be to decide that this was how the day was going to play out and be of a 'mindset' that keeps us stuck in frustration not open to serendipity. My meeting is actually really important and I don't know the people I'm meeting and for all I know my lateness might be a problem.. there would have been a time when I would have panicked these days I can apologise, let them know and trust I am received with the energy I intentionally put out...we can never change what is but we can choose a perception that plays it forward well.
It's Valentine's Day today and I know so many people still buy into the belief system that we are only complete when someone outside of us tells us we are enough and tells us we are the 'one' and yet from experience we cannot seek love outside of us until we are sufficiently 'in love' with ourselves that we are enough just as we are and with this we begin to attract those that see the truth in us 'warts and all' and we begin to reach our full potential whilst keeping our feet on the ground and reaching for the stars.
Life will always be a rollercoaster and the only thing certain is uncertainty but once we know we are seen and heard by ourselves, nothing is impossible and everything becomes more about heart and soul than 'mind over matter' and we get on with simply being the best version of ourselves and being good at whatever it is we do.
Create the life you love and allow the rest to take care of itself because when you allow yourself to be enough, life will meet you half way on every level naturally and without being someone you are not. Wishing you a very happy valentines to yourself 💕

I am often faced with clients who are caught within the healthcare system that fragments a person from being whole. A person may visit their GI specialist about their gut issues, but not talk about their stressors at home/work. Similarly, one may go see a psychologist and mention their depression, but not being up their IBS concerns. One is often led to believe that each symptom belongs to a certain specialist. I agree with the concept of seeking certain health professionals for specific systems— but my hope is that therapy be a place where ALL aspects of health come together. A place where all 3 brains are queried.

For example, when it comes to serotonin, 90% of it is created in your gut— this neurotransmitter is responsible for your mood, emotions, memory, ADHD symptoms etc. The serotonin made in your gut is the exact same #neurotransmitter made in your brain, so when a person has an unhealthy gut, not only does that affect one’s immune system, but mental health concerns as well. And in turn, our mental health issues affect what we eat, how healthy we eat and how we experience the world. .

The impact that exercise has on gut health/function. Some good research reads and reviews for those interested. Plenty of research in metabolomics on diet and gut, now there is trend on exercise independent of diet!

Body composition and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) are huge indicators of gut health and function.

It’s a sliding scale on CRF and Obesity. Being leaner and fitter = better gut health. Not rocket science!

Take home training message = consistent resistance training combined with high and varied intensity interval training, will give you favorable body composition and improve your CRF. AND CRF is one of the strongest predictors of mortality!

I was reading a post today that talked about ‘overwhelm’ and how they had lost their ‘way’ in life and needed help refining what their ‘mojo’ feels like ... a place we all find ourselves from time to time but it becomes even more common when we set ourselves ‘bars’ that require us to be that superhuman who ‘keeps calm and carries on’ and believes in the old mantra if ‘smile and the world smiles with you, cry and you cry alone’ ...it’s those strong people who find being vulnerable the hardest especially to admit to themselves... mainly because everyone expects nothing less particularly themselves.
I also read a post about the importance of friends and how they are the ones we can truly be ‘real’ with but then I read the list of the ‘influencers’ so called friends that they tagged...they all display picture perfect Instagram profiles that look like life is totally worked out and there is never a hair out if place. Whilst I know that’s not real life, I am conscious that for those who are not in alignment with themselves ‘comparison is the thief of joy’ and they will seek more of what they believe ...that they are not enough just as we are and there will be plenty of examples out there to prove them supposedly right.
People can love us to the moon and back but unless we love ourselves from the inside out we will find ways to prove we are not ‘quite’ enough and often it’s far less obvious and much more subconscious than we could ever ‘imagine’. Social media absolutely has its place but not when our mind us our master not our servant.
There is of course no such thing as a perfect life but when we are in alignment with ourselves we know how it feels to be loved and we know both our boundaries and our expectations and with this we both learn to never give discounts to those who offer anything less than what we ‘know’ and we seek those that seek the joy not the fear in life too.... and with this we find like attracts like naturally

“For things to change, you have to change. - Jim Rohn” So simply yet so true. Regardless of your situation or circumstances there’s only one thing stopping you from getting what you desire and that’s... you. Many of us, myself included want a lot out of life and dream and wish for it but how many of us are actively gaining the right skills and knowledge to obtain it? Not many. I’m guilty of this for sure. I’d use to say things like “Oh if things would happen this way or that way” or “If I could just get lucky once and a while.” Where did that get me? Short answer, no where I want to be. So I decided to analyze my situation to death. What don’t I like? Well a lot. Okay what is it going to take to fix it? Well a lot. Okay I have two choices. Continue my life as it is and in 5 years I’ll arrive probably at the exact same position. Or change myself and my daily disciplines one step at a time, brick by brick, day by day and with consistency and grit where will you be in 5 years from today? I can’t say for certain but I can tell you it’s going to be a whole lot better than where you are now!
