Bihu and Muga silk are synonymous with each other. So here is my 20-year old, very-traditional muga mekhela sador with red thread motifs that I wore yesterday as we went round to meet our family elders and seniors. Usually, Muga is not the first choice for Assamese women for other occasions. But Bihu is always special and Muga Silk is extra-special, fit for royalty. Even Bihu dancers wear Muga with red motifs but with red blouse. We, however, do not get married in Muga. We wear white/ off-white with heavy gold zari. @dr_kirtika_panda this one is for you.
Muga is the wild silk from Assam with GI tag. The silk is extremely durable and usually guaranteed to last for 100 years. It can be hand washed and it’s lustre increases after every wash. It has a natural molten gold tint with a shimmering, glossy texture. Swipe to the end to see the mekhela and sador.
Previously, the weavers used to put lot of starch to the raw threads to make them easier to weave. The finished product, as a result, used to be very stiff - like you r wearing a piece of paper. As a young girl, we never liked wearing new Muga sets. We would make our moms wear it for a few times till it gets a bit soft and then we take it from them. Nowadays, the Muga Silks are much softer comparatively.
Muga Silk has become very expensive starting from around Rs 35,000.
One has to keep in mind a few things while buying Muga:
1) It has a GI tag. So, if anyone tells you about Muga Silk from other state, don’t believe it. It may be Tussar.
2) Always buy from someone you can trust (a reputed boutique). Government emporiums are also fine but sometimes you don’t get many varieties.
3) it is difficult to distinguish between genuine 100% Muga or mixed variety. Sometimes, you get cheaper variety that is mixed with Tussar. It is okay to go for it, so long as you are aware of what you are buying.
4) Muga is mixed with Pat (mulberry silk) to get Pat-Muga silk. Muga waste is also used called gheesha muga.
Please feel free to add or correct what I have said about Muga Silk.
