I've not written about music for a while which is weird because music is still one of the pillars from which I draw strength and find peace. Loud music and I can just be, I switch off my thoughts and let the music play. I'd like to talk about this album, "Affirmation" by Savage Garden. Now you all know I'm a massive SG fan but the truth is I don't listen to them anymore like I used to but recently I listened to this album again and there was so much flowing through me.
"Affirmation" is not an easy album to listen to. I always found the juxtaposition of high energy songs and heartbreaking depressing tracks hard to adjust to. You're jumping around to "Chained to You" and then you want to cry your heart out to "Gunning Down Romance". "Affirmation" tells the story of a break-up, a breakdown and realising some important stuff about yourself and all of this comes in different moods and shapes. One minute you're positive and inspirational, you believe "in love surviving death into eternity", the next you are saying "romance never did a thing for me". Healing is not linear but the overall feeling of "Affirmation" is both positive (a positive affirmation) and strong (through the affirmation of yourself). So nearly 20 years on, this album makes sense to me more than ever.
My first listen in 99 was painful. Very painful. I remember sitting at my desk and crying as listened and read the lyrics. I was heartbroken for Darren. So much pain. I just wanted to hold him as he begged in "Hold Me". I remember feeling deeply guilty for any instance my teenage self wished Darren wasn't married so he could marry me. As if my young celebrity crush could bear any influence on his relationship's demise. It haunts me that aged 16 I could feel so lonely, lost and disillusioned with life to the point of finding solace in "The Lover After Me" or "You Can Still Be Free" but the truth is I didn't fully comprehend the complexity of "Affirmation" then, but I do now. Thank you for growing with me @darrenhayes 💜, "you get me through this cruel, cruel world"
