If I’m craving a certain food, I almost always eat it! Will power only works for so long until you cave. This can sometimes lead to even bigger food splurges than you would have taken in the first place.

Use nutrition skill power instead of will power! That is exactly what I did in this example here. I was really craving a waffle so I ate one, but I also made sure to eat quality protein, healthy fats, and vegetables.🥑

Importance of keeping a food journal

So, you may say you followed a "diet"; but it just didn't work. How do you know you were really following it if you didn't log what you were eating? Maybe it didn't work because you only 'thought" you were following it but since you didn't actually log what you were eating...you have no idea how close you followed the guidelines, if at all.

Funny thing about us humans; we think we are eating healthy, believe we watch our portions...but the reality is rarely, if ever what we think it is.
We figure we don't have time to journal what we're eating; no time to measure or weigh our foods. But, we're eating healthy so it doesn't matter. Right?

Unfortunately, that's not right.
You really could be eating perfectly healthy, perfectly "clean" and perfectly too much or even not enough for your size.

Too much food is too much food regardless if it is "healthy" or "unhealthy"; our body treats too many calories as fat storage regardless where the calories come from.

So how much are you really eating?
Are you really getting the right balance of macro nutrients - Water, Carbohydrates, Proteins & Fats?
What about micro nutrients & minerals?
What about serving sizes?
You might be surprised what a serving size is....you may think you are eating a "serving" and be eating 2-3 or more servings and getting anywhere from 3-4x as many calories per day then you think.

How many calories should you be getting?
One way to find out is to provide me your stats and I can provide that information to you.

The deal is, though if you are not tracking what you are eating; you likely could be eating too much or too little (which is just as bad) either way you will gain weight/fat.
I personally love the online food tracker applications because you can track no matter where you are at. You can check your tracker before you eat when you are out to ensure you stay within your dietary needs.

🧐Don’t even bother researching the adverse health effects of sugar sweetened beverages like soda and fruit juices.
The data is overwhelming. ☠️The main problem isn’t the #sugar, as sugar is in almost everything. The issue is the ease and convenience of these sugar-sweetened drinks.

You can drink up 200 calories and go for another round before ever knowing your “full”. For some, trying to kick the #soda habit may seem as hard as quitting smoking. 👌🏽 So a tactic I recommend is weaning yourself off via other carbonated beverages.

Here’s the catch though. The carbonated beverage should have:
❌no sugars ❌no artificial sweeteners

Since I live in Massachusetts (in between #Boston and #worcester), @polarbeverages is the first drink that comes to mind. They make them in all sorts of flavor “essences”, but you can find unsweetened carbonated drinks almost anywhere in the 🌎.

😋SUPER quick, nutritious dinner I made the other night & posted to my story:

Ingredients:
4oz cooked shrimp🍤
2C frozen, cooked broccoli 🥦
1/2C cooked quinoa
1/4C tikka masala sauce

Directions:
I prepared the quinoa per directions on the package (1C quinoa with 2C water -- 10 mins total!). While that was cooking, I thawed the shrimp in the microwave while the broccoli was thawing/cooking in a sauté pan. Once the quinoa was done, I mixed everything in the sauté pan and it was ready to eat!

Nutrition: 345 calories | 36g protein | 4.5g fat | 48.5g carbohydrates | 14.5g fiber👈🙌

LEG DAYS FOR RUNNERS (and well... everyone else too).⁣

For all my new friends here — hey I’m Lyss. I used to power-lift & now run ultra marathons & have become a ray of “you can lift and run” light around here. So I get a ton of questions about balancing the two.⁣

The truth is, lifting and running together seems really hard and impossible. But not if you do it strategically!⁣

For many of my very running focused friends you may not go to the gym, or want to use a barbell for your strength. Which, is okay! You still NEED to incorporate some progressive lifting in your training to develop the muscular, tendon, and ligament health needed for big miles.⁣

KEEP IT SIMPLE!!! The running community is just as bad as fitspos with over complicating it. ⁣

Some key things: ⁣

🔑 Stick to unilateral movements (one sided) since your sport depends on individual leg strength and landing⁣

🔑 LIFT BAREFOOT, if possible. Or get flat lifting shoes. Please stop lifting in your running shoes! You need a stable base, but this also helps train your tripod foot 🦶 placement and strength. Aka being able to land and balance your weight evenly across your foot, aka controls your knees, hips, etc. ALL ABOUT INJURY PREVENTION.⁣

💪🏻 Here are a few staple exercise I ALWAYS keep in my training, even when miles are high and I can’t keep up with heavy barbell loads. These are ALWAYS my accessory moves both on and off season (rotated).⁣

I also listed some not here that are equally as useful. As well as some lifting + running considerations. YES you need lifting and it helps support your goals but keep your focus specific during on and off racing training phases!⁣

And it goes without saying running friends — LIFTING WONT MAKE YOU HEAVY AND SLOW!! You have to try really hard for that to happen ♥️🤟🏻

Just ask #Popeye. 🤓Aside from #folate, #vitaminC, niacin, and #potassium, spinach is a good source of #iron [which is better absorbed when ingested with vitamin c]. My favourite part of the process is NOT the initial fat loss/ diet phase but the part in which i keep the client lean and push their food way up..... diets are NOT meant to be sustainable but the part after is.... this is one of the most important bits so you don't regress in the future and how you maintain results.... too many females are caught up in the vicious circle of yo yo dieting..... it takes time to do it right and break this vicious circle.

#NoFilter Check in today with @mark_anthonydoherty .. What to say..we started with cycling carbs ,2+1 carb day for a month to loose that bodyfat, and to loose some of those kilos.. Then we started increasing carbs week by week, now after 4th week with 170g of carbs per day, we are still on the same bodyweight, same bodyfat, and leaner muscles.

I just love how human body reacts to healthy eating, and how it is capable of change.

Purposeful learning immerses children in learning about food.

Children do not see macronutrients or micronutrients when they eat therefore this concept is too abstract.

They think with their eyes 👁👁, nose 👃, ears👂👂, hands 🖐🏿 🤚🏾, and tongue 👅.

How is eating seasonal going?! Anyone else jumped on board with me? This week I’m upping my greens. Some really affordable options I’m seeing in season near me are brussels sprouts, artichoke, and broccoli. Sound appetizing to anyone else? 😂 I will be frank with you, I don’t believe anyone would be excited to eat anything I just mentioned.
BUT, you can make them tasty (think cheese on top OR spices like garlic powder or Italian seasoning). You can also incorporate them in dishes you already love so they aren’t so “in your face”. The goal here is to make the food you eat enjoyable and make a long term lifestyle out of it.

NUTRITION FACT: “Greens” get their green color based on the specific phytochemicals they possess. These naturally occurring plant chemicals can:
-reduce inflammation -block other foods and drink from becoming carcinogenic -aid in DNA repair and/or reduce DNA damage
-slow growth of cancer cells
-regulate hormones
-reduce cell breakdown that leads to cancer .... sounds nice huh? So get your greens in! *Also keep me posted if you like posts like this one and want more nutrition info! Can I go anywhere without snacks? The answer’s no. It’s something I always recommend as a way to properly fuel yourself during the day so that you’re never absolutely starving at any point, which can be problematic for a lot of reasons (number 1 being it’s just uncomfortable!). I say to go with a three part snack —> one that has one of each:
• Lean protein (chicken, all natural deli turkey, tofu cubes, beans, egg)
• Fiber from carbs (whole grain crackers/bread/etc, veg, fruit)
• A healthy fat (avocado, nut butters/nuts, olives, etc)

What’s your go-to snack right now? I’m loving an oatmeal bake w/ nut butter (@rxbar nut butter packets for even more protein from egg whites!) 🥜🥚

⭐️ Now I try to work smarter and not harder and always prioritize rest + fun. It's not a perfect balance but boundaries and listening to my body are KEY. .

⭐️ Because... if we "grind" and "hustle" we won't be much good to anyone.. running on empty. So, my #TIP for today is to tune into your body and slow it down ladies - take care of yo' selves and ditch the hustle mindset ;) 🤘🏻 .

Choose fitness goals with a deeper meaning that won’t disappear with age or physique.

Obviously things change a bit for competitive athletes as quantifiable goals are often necessary.
.
But if you’re just concerned with health and/or struggle with consistency then try this➡️attach a deeper meaning to the fitness goal.
.
WHY do you want to lose the weight? WHY do you want to have a certain physique?
.
If the answer is “to look good” then you’re setting yourself up for failure.
.
Something like, “to set a good example for my kids” is probably something that will ALWAYS be there. On the other hand, certain physique goals eventually become unattainable and disappear.
.
You might find that you have more “success” if you focus more on these intrinsic goals and motivation vs the extrinsic ones.

For people with Gestational Diabetes, you can have this amount as a snack. Be mindful these are still energy dense so keep it as a treat! ENJOY 😋
