Posted @withrepost • @finchandfolly Here’s my advice for starting rosemary by seed…don’t😉 I only say that because sowing Rosemary from seed can be a very frustrating experience. Rosemary in general has a low germination rate, so just getting some seedlings to sprout can be a victory in itself. Then, those little seedlings grow on at a snail’s pace. Why not skip this hassle & go straight to a much better way to propagate your rosemary…
Snip a 6” long stem of rosemary that has both a bit of new & old growth on it.
Gently strip off the lower 2”-3” of leaves.
Place in small jar of water & keep in a warm, sunny spot.
Make sure to give your cuttings fresh water every 2-3 days, giving the jar a quick cleaning as well to remove any slime. This is a key step to do! In anywhere from 2-8 weeks, you should see happy, little roots sprouting out.
Rosemary & Lavender are my two favorite herbs to root up this way, but there are many others that work great too, like sage, thyme, mint & oregano. Experiment & see what shoots up! You’ll find some herbs sprout fairly quickly, like mint, basil & oregano, while others like lavender & rosemary could take well over a month. Once a healthy root system has been established, pot up in soil & give it some good light to grow on. After it’s acclimated to pot-life, pinch out the tips of your cuttings to encourage branching out.
Don’t get discouraged if you don’t have immediate success. It’s sometimes a hit or miss thing…I’ve had cuttings that have flourished & ones that didn’t go anywhere. I go into it with a few more cuttings than I really need, in case some don’t root.
Here’s rooting to each & every one of you for happy Rosemary babies this summer💚
