Because we can’t help ourselves, here’s more from the incomparable Toni Morrison on her 88th birthday. #ShowUp
Happy Birthday to #AudreLorde and #ToniMorrison whose revolutionary voices challenged traditional narratives of Black women. Their works continue to teach us to be critical, intersectional, and independent. Thank you! #BlackHistoryMonth [Audre Lorde image via Entity / Toni Morrison image via @writersofcolour]
DAY 18: TONI MORRISON
I (Melissa) learned about Toni Morrison in graduate school but only after actively seeking out literature that I hadn’t been taught. Then as a high school teacher, I taught her books, including Beloved and The Bluest Eye. She is a brilliant novelist, essayist, editor, teacher and professor emeritus at Princeton. She’s won the Pulitzer, the American Book Award and the Nobel Prize In 1993. Today is her 88th birthday. Happy birthday to a living legend.

Every day for #blackhistorymonth, we are going to share some knowledge about black Americans that we never got in school. We challenge all our followers to amplify! Repost, tag us and make sure to include #showup

The real crisis has NOTHING to do with a wall. It’s that conditions in these migrants’ countries are so dangerous, so unfathomably difficult and so oppressive that the only option is to literally flee for their lives. They flee with only the clothes on their back. They flee in the middle of the night. They flee clutching their children in their arms. They flee with only one thing keeping them going - hope. These people have the legal right to seek asylum. They have the right to be heard. Al Otro Lado is here to uphold those rights and the laws that protect them.
In this @tedx_official talk, David Ikard, Professor of African American and Diaspora Studies, discusses the dangers of whitewashing black history.
A story that history often gets wrong is the one of civil rights icon and lifelong activist, Rosa Parks. Parks was a seasoned freedom fighter, but history paints her as a “tired” and “quiet” figure.
Sound ON to listen to a true account. 🔈 #BlackHistory #RosaParks

Our most comprehensive work on the racism in Dr. Seuss's children's books was published TODAY in the journal of Research on Diversity in Youth Literature!!
🌱
We document 7 decades of racism in Seuss's published works and debunk the myth that he "changed", "apologized", or that any of his work can be considered "antiracist". We break down the racial bias implications of using his work with young children and how using his books to teach "anti-racism" perpetuates white supremacy. Almost every book and biography on Seuss's work to-date has been done by white researchers. As scholars of color, this article is unique in that it is written by members of groups Seuss explicitly degraded and dehumanized across his hundreds of racist works. We also write from our positionality as scholar-parents of children of color, and discuss how that informs our work and advocacy--not only a personal level, but a national policy level. 🌱
This is a great article to circulate to teachers, administrators, and parents, especially if you are advocating for a change at your school. You can access a PDF of it for free via the link in our profile. Thank you for reading, sharing, and discussing--and thank you to RDYL for the opportunity and platform. 🌱
The mission of Research on Diversity in Youth Literature is to publish scholarship attending to issues of diversity, equity, social justice, inclusion, and intersectionality in youth literature, culture, and media.

I am no S.E. Cupp fan, but she’s right here. It’s disgusting to be giddy over this shit. The whole thing sucks. My #workshop on Breaking the Cycle of #Discrimination and Undoing Racism can be uncomfortable. Talking about racial issues and being an activist, and race facilator is difficult and emotional work but its worth it. Because it's  an opportunity to provoke thought, push back against hate and break racial barriers. So big shout out to @momsforsocialjustice for being bold enough to book this workshop. It was very inspiring to meet people who want to committ to change, willing to challenge their beliefs and listen. #Chattanooga #racialjustice #civilrights anti #Discrimination

This is a really important and long overdue discussion that needs to be had in all corners of the yoga and spirituality world in the west. I'm calling on my yoga friends to head over to @susannabarkataki and register for the Honor {Don't Appropriate} Yoga Summit.
This summit has some ridiculously high-calibre speakers looking at how the yoga community can do better. If you are a teacher or student who believes that yoga is a force for positive change in the world, then I believe these discussions are non-negotiable.
You may think this doesn't apply to you, or that your practice or experience is somehow different. Doing the work may feel many versions of uncomfortable. These are both excellent reasons why you need to be there. [Image description: Text reads: evidence of systemic racism is everywhere in yoga in the west. If you aren't actively countering it, consider, perhaps you are part of it?] ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

United Kingdom Youth have 4 key demands :

The government should declare a "climate emergency"

It should also inform the public about the seriousness of the situation

The national curriculum should be reformed to include "the ecological crisis"

The age of voting should be lowered to 16 so younger people can be involved in decision-making around environmental issues

About 554,000 people in the U.S. were homeless on any given night in 2017 — including nearly 58,000 families with children — meaning they didn't have a safe, permanent place to sleep. That figure represents a 1 percent rise since 2016 — the first time the nation's homeless population has increased in seven years. But the country's biggest cities, especially those on the West Coast, have seen a far bigger rise in homelessness. New York City, which has the nation's largest homeless population, reported a 4 percent increase since 2016 to about 76,500 people, San Diego a 5 percent increase to 9,160, and Los Angeles a 26 percent increase to nearly 55,200.

Perhaps for some of you here today, I am the face of one of your fears. Because I am woman, because I am black, because I am lesbian, because I am myself, a black woman warrior poet doing my work, come to ask you, are you doing yours? And of course, I am afraid—you can hear it in my voice—because the transformation of silence into language and action is an act of self-revelation and that always seems fraught with danger.

As #ValentinesDay weekend comes to a close, I want to know how you are cultivating this love throughout the year.

This eternal beacon that pours from our highest self. The love we share with our pets, families, friends, partners, selves, and our communities. And the knowledge that sometimes, that same love means setting boundaries between ourselves and those who claim to love us, or those that were ‘supposed to’ love (i.e. family just because they’re family). What are you doing to keep this love pouring? How will you continue to cultivate it, spread it, receive it, and extend it to the world? Especially during such trying times (which is often when such boundaries begin to reveal themselves as necessary to our survival). It seems that each day, there is a different community on the news that continues to suffer from unnecessary injustices. Racial injustices, gender disparities, impoverishment, the list shouldn’t go on, but we know all too well that it does.

How do you use love to enlighten your life? How do you maintain your own love during times when it seems as though the world has run out? How do you set boundaries for yourself and this love?
“As a #Jew, an #Israeli citizen, and a professional #lobbyist (ahem, #activist), I speak from personal experience when I say that #AIPAC is tremendously effective, and the lubricant that makes its operation hum is dollar, dollar bills.

AIPAC and its partners, which include #Christian #Zionists and #military contractors, are a central pillar of the Israeli occupation. Without #congressional support, the #Likud/anti- #Palestine/pro-occupation project would be radically undermined. The money that AIPAC and the rest of the lobby spend is indispensable to that work. That’s why they spend it. Pointing this out is not #antiSemitic.

We do, in fact, have a growing anti-Semitism problem in America. But #Ilhan #IlhanOmar and #RashidaTlaib #Tlaib are not a part of it. They are allies of mine and of Jews across this country who are fighting for #peace, #racialjustice, #immigrants’ rights, and the defeat of fascism. The anti-Semites are the #Nazis and #whitesupremacists who marched and murdered in #Charlottesville, whom Donald #Trump called “very fine people,” and the #MAGA supporter who massacred worshippers at a #Pittsburgh #synagogue.” - Ady Barkan

🤔The Center for Food Safety reports:
.
.
“A groundbreaking new study published in the journal Environmental Research found that switching to an organic diet for just one week significantly reduced the levels of synthetic pesticides found in all human participants. On average, the pesticides detected dropped by 60.5 percent after six days of eating an all-organic diet. 😮 .
Another 2018 study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association found that the most frequent consumers of organic food had 25 percent fewer cancers overall than those who never ate organic food. 👍
.
We know that pesticide residues are detected four times more often in conventional food than organic food. 😡And we know that eating organic food lowers the risk of impairment in the physical and mental development of children.”
.
.

40% of American children eat school lunches. 🙏🏼🙏🏼Please 🙏🏼🙏🏼let your local congressional representatives know that it is important to make the National School Lunch Program organic. All people should have the right to eat pesticide-free food, especially vulnerable children, whose bodies and brains are still developing.

Today we met @mariannewilliamson speaking on her campaign for president in NH. She allowed my girl to ask a question about racial issues during Q&A session (in front of dozens of adults) and she listens to and speaks on the importance of healing childhood trauma / family PTSD in order to remedy our nation's disparities/ inequalities and underlying poverty of values, education and economic growth. That by allowing all children to thrive and to have more equitable financial and emotional/ mental stability and opportunity, we ensure a sustainable future for them in this country. (She has also been a counselor to Oprah and is a NY Times bestselling author...) What I appreciate most about her is her ability to speak in simple /layman's terms with a holistic approach to all things - whether family, healing, politics, health, environment, war, racism, gender equality, while also sharing extensive historical knowledge and wisdom. Her point is that a nation is simply a collection of individuals who each need to be heard or represented or healed of trauma- much like our entire country/ leadership as a whole. She calls us to look deeper, opening up conversations at a causal/ root level of the systems in place that have led to our nation's current issues.
.
If you aren't familiar with @mariannewilliamson
and her decades of humanitarian activism/ the non-profits she started in the 80s for hiv/aids, hunger, women's political empowerment, etc... please read up or watch her informative announcement speech on YouTube. #marianne2020 #mariannewilliamson

This is a friendly reminder that if your crew doesn’t include people of color, it may be a sign that your life is more racially segregated than you would like to think, and that you/your institutions might hold stories and beliefs about race that are limiting and harmful. (And the same goes for other types of diversification. No gay ppl? Huh. No fat ppl? Really?? Because most of the world is of color; and there are tons of fat ppl; and there are tons of LGBTQ ppl... etc)
Not to say homogenous crews are per se bad, and not to say homogenous crews mean you are closed-minded. It’s just that, particularly with race, we have BEEN SEGREGATED for grotesque reasons and w/ lethal consequences...yet we often choose (unconsciously?) to continue living this segregation despite most of us SAYING segregation is bad. Re race, it’s especially true for *progressive white people.* Weird right? So it’s worth asking why.
I recommend asking why/ “what’s that about?” at least 10 times and see what you get. This helps me trace my own blind spots back to a political root that shows my choices might be biased, and my biases aren’t random. This knowledge is powerful!

Hypothetical *Oversimplified* Example: I don’t have black people in my circle. Why? None went to my school. What’s that about? It was private school, really expensive, it was just mostly white people. Why? I guess white people were the ones who could afford it, lived near it. Why? Well, in my area the black neighborhoods were more like projects, so I’m assuming the parents didn’t have money. Whats that about? Well till the 70s black people weren’t allowed to live anywhere but the projects. And they had low-paying jobs. Why? Because white ppl didn’t want to live with black people or hire them. Why? Racism.
Doesn’t mean the person here holds those same beliefs, but they might hold biases, or be living in choices, ROOTED temporary in those beliefs.
Maybe you do something w/ what you learn. Maybe not. But it’s better to know. It’s a start.

To reiterate, I don’t coach in DM’s nor do I respond to them (unless we already have an arrangement). It’s clearly stated in my bio. I have coaching and consulting services if you want me to spend my time educating you. This post is in response to one of many DM’s I still get despite the people acknowledging they know I have a no DM policy. That’s an example of white fragility. To learn how so, start by registering for my masterclasses #unpackyourprivilege and searching my hashtags for all the free advice and education, I spend hours doing here each week. There’s a couple of years + work here and on my Patreon from a 40+year lifetime of experience and education. Then order these books from @catriceology. Really listen, critically think, go deeper into your own thinking, conditioning and behaviours and ask yourself ‘why did I think I was so exceptional to breach a clearly set boundary and entitled to even ask to be educated by a stranger on the internet before making much of an effort to explore this on my own?’

Neal Hall, M.D. received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University. After earning an M.D. from Michigan State University, he took his surgical subspecialty training in ophthalmology at Harvard University’s Medical School. He was in private practice for over 20 years.

Dr. Hall is an award-winning author of four books of poetry: Nigger For Life, reflecting his painful discovery, that in “unspoken America,” race is the one thing by which he is first judged, first measured and metered diminished value, dignity, equality and justice. Winter’s A’ Coming Still reflecting the more things are said to change, the more things are made to stay the same. Appalling Silence represents selections of his work translated into Telugu and Urdu and published and released in India. His fourth book Where Do I Sit. displays the skill, breadth, and versatility with which he has honed his craft. It does not jettison the sharp denunciations of racial and economic injustice. His fifth book Door of No Return will be released in the fall of 2017.

His work has been translated into 5 additional languages: Bengali, Kannada, German, Japanese and Italian. The Italian translations are being used to create and publish a Critical Edition of his work in Rome, Italy. Three collaborating Italian scholars performed the translations and will do the critical analysis. In Japan, African American Studies Professor Kazuteru Omori of Hokkai Gakuen University, Sapporo has translation a collection of Hall’s work into Japanese. The collection is to be published and launched in Japan September 2017.
.
.
Dr. Hall’s poetry speaks not just to the surface pain of injustice and inhumanity but deep into that pain, we label and package into genteel socio-political-economic-religious constructs to blur the common lines of cause, that is our shared story. A shared story that should unite us in a common struggle to be free.

BLACK HERSTORY: “Usually when people talk about the 'strength' of Black [womxn] they ignore the reality that to be strong in the face of oppression is not the same as overcoming oppression, that endurance is not to be confused with transformation." - bell hooks⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
All my life I've been called STRONG. And make no mistake, I am. Mentally, emotionally, physically, I can be tough AF. But what has come hand in hand with this characterization is that I am not in need of support. That I am somehow less desiring of care. This translates into medical racism, little Black girls viewed as grown womxn + a world that relies on Black womxn without ever showing us the concern we bestow on others. And THAT is some real racist bullshit.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So many Black womxn are strong because we have had little other choice. If not for my mental + emotional fortitude I simply wouldn't exist. My strength is equal parts deep, inner resolve and a tenacity for sheer survival. The strength you see is a result of my ability to withstand a daily onslaught of misogynoir. It was handed down to me from my mother + her mother before her.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I love my strength, it is one of my many powers. But we need to stop viewing Black womxn as superheroes. My ability to withstand oppression is not the same as having the power to overcome it. I cannot "overcome oppression", rather oppression itself needs to be overcome.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Yes Black womxn are leading the charge towards racial justice but do not confuse our strength with institutional power. We cannot will this world into submission no matter how hard we try + we. stay. trying. Black womxn WILL guide us all to salvation but do not sit back + expect us to carry you there.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We are not mules. We are not mammies. We are magic. I am strong AND I deserve support. I am strong AND I feel pain. I am strong AND I am worthy of care. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I can endure things you can only begin to fathom but that doesn't mean I should have to. xo R⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

“We’re here. We’re the adults at the party now!”
🗣
Today I listened to an incredible interview with @jonahhill on the @breakfastclubam. I also watched his incredible movie @mid90smovie this week. It brought back a ton of nostalgia for me, as I grew up vibing on fashion, grunge and classic hip hop. This drove my personality and molded me as an individual. It brought me back to a place where your friends truly become your family.

What was also revealed to me in the interview with Jonah, was that the mediums provided to us-IG, FB, Snapchat, website applications, etsy etc, allow us to steer the narrative and where we love it to go. There are so many ways to create content and also use platforms to share critical messages for our times. For the last few years, I still considered myself the “kid” in the room, even though I am nearly 40. What I have come to realize now, is that I am in this place of becoming an elder and mentor to an entirely new generation....That is incredibly powerful and humbling. ✨
The 30-50 age bracket to me has a lot to say, and a lot of incredible influencers. This message is reflective of growing up in the mid 80’s and 90’s. There was a level of freedom and the start of culture creations and expectations that generations are benefiting from today. For this, I am grateful for my experiences.

So listen up! We’ve got something to say. We are the ones we have been waiting for. Our time is NOW.....

We are all one humanity, with common foes. “All of our lineage is from Adam عليه السلام, and he was made from dirt.
We are all returning to the dirt. Think about that the next time you feel as if you’re better or lesser than someone else due to family tree or skin color.
Arrogance is sinful, and self-loathing is not virtuous” - Sh. Dawud Walid #racialjustice #racialharmony #coexist #islam #islamicquotes
