𝔻𝕒𝕪 𝟞𝟛. 𝔽𝕖𝕓 𝟙𝟠𝕥𝕙 𝟚𝟘𝟙𝟡- Today was another travel day. We were heading to Tikal, Guatemala’s most iconic Mayan city. Jaun, our host at the Eco Lodge had said he would drive us to our next destination, but it wouldn’t be until 3pm, so we had the first part of the day to laze around.
The journey to Tikal took around an hour and a half. On the way, Jaun told us about the upcoming elections in Guatemala. There are 36 political parties here, and corruption is rife. He also told us his view one one of the biggest industries in Guatemala, the trafficking of cocaine, from Colombia through to the U.S. It was fascinating hearing all about the cartels and the governments attempt to control them.
Our accomodation at Tikal was actually inside the National Park. We’d paid a little extra to be this close to the entrance to ancient city, as we wanted to be there first thing in the morning to explore before the crowds arrived.
At sunset Ben had a kip, and I went out to look for wildlife. There were so many birds!!! The first ones I saw were these Ocellated Turkeys. They are now only found in Yucatán, Mexico, Peten in Guatemala and a few places in Belize. The species in endangered due to illegal hunting. #ocellatedturkey #guatemala #tikal #tikalnationalpark #mayan #mayancity
